I think it's really important for female students to leanr self defence or carry some kind of personal protection with them. when you're out and drinking, you can get oblvious to what's going on around you and it's important to stay safe at ALL time. Anyone got some tips to share for keeping safe?

First and foremost, keep your wits about you. And if you don't want to be in a condition in which you intend to keep your wits about you, then be with someone who is willing to watch over you.
Also, it helps to have some self-dense skills. Classes, especially at a university, are cheap and often free. And they teach some invaluable skills. |

I also really can't stress how important is to always travel back home with a group of other people. never go alone.

These are great points. My friends and I always have the designated driver also act as the sound of reason. We take a pact that whatever the DD says goes, since when drinking you can sometimes lose that sense of reason which would otherwise tell you to not make out with the toothless guy. |

Another big thing to remember is to watch what you're drinking. Supervise the person who mixes it, and don't take a drink from a stranger. Also, if you set your cup down and quit paying attention to it, just get a new drink in a fresh container. You don't know who has been messing with your used one.

What a great point, junkie. A friend of mine was given a drink by a guy in a club and a little while later she was totally not herself. We got her out of there, and I'm glad I was there to take care of her!

That must have been really scary. I'm pretty much always the self-designated driver at crazy parties, because I would never want any of my friends to unintentionally end up in a bad situation. And a lot of designated drivers oftne break down and drink. You have to make sure you're with people you can really trust to stay sober. I don't really care for most alcohol anyway, so I'd rather just stay completely sober and take care of the others.

Good point junkie. There have been a couple of times when our DD has let us down and we all had to get taxis home.

You have GOT to be aware of what's going on around you, and give yourself permission to be rude if someone is making you uncomfortable. I was attacked while walking home alone one night because a) I wasn't paying attention and b) I made eye contact and smiled at a man standing in my path because I was uncomfortable. I got a broken jaw out of that, and consider myself lucky it wasn't worse.

Very good point. Everyone should be so careful of where they leave their drinks. Make sure your friends will keep an eye on you too.
